“SMOKE AND GAS”
FROM THE
MULVANE MARAUDERS
AUGUST - 2016

~Meeting was held Thursday, 8/18/16 and called to order at 6:45PM by President Kevin Cardwell at the Mulvane American Legion.
~40 members and guests were present.  It was good to have Julian Heersche back with us after having some health issues and good to see Fred Cook too!
~New member Eric Evans was introduced to the club.   Welcome to the Marauders - we are glad you have chosen our club.
~Steve Nichols gave the treasurer's report and advised the club that all bills/expenses have been paid in full including the three checks for the charities from Showdown.   Steve also made deposits for dues that have recently been paid.
~Kevin and the officers made check presentations to the three Showdown charities.  Accepting on behalf of the Kansas Honor Flight were Herb & Jo Anne Duncan, Cheryl Boyes on behalf of the USMC Toys for Tots and the officers accepted the donation check on behalf of Larry Gunkle of the Kansas Food Bank ( he was unable to attend the meeting).  Kevin & Steve will ensure the check gets to the Food Bank.   The Honor Flight and Toys for Tots groups were most grateful for the very generous donation from the Marauders.  Many Wichita and Kansas folks will benefit from these donations.   Pictures were taken for the website and representatives from the Derby Reporter and Mulvane News were hand for photos as well.  Way to go Marauders!!!
~The commander of the American Legion, John Metz,  gave a heartfelt thanks to the club and members for all they have done to help and participate with the Legion.  They are appreciative of the partnership and association with the Marauders.  He also announced that they would be serving breakfast prior to the Mulvane Old Settlers Car Show.
~Kevin introduced Randy Treece - representing the Wichita Art Museum - as he gave a short presentation regarding a car event - Wheels Up - including Jesse Alexander: The Golden Age of Motorsport. The event will be Thursday, 9/15/16, from 6-10PM. Randy invited Marauders to participate by displaying their cars at the Museum.  There is limited room for vehicles so members must contact Randy if you would like to participate - if you display a car you will be given two passes to include the events inside the Museum.  Cars need to be in place between 5 and 5:30PM and need to remain until 10PM.  Contact Randy at 316-841-9034 to enter this display.  Texts only - no calls.
~Member Chris Middendorf reminded members about the Old Settlers Car Show on Saturday, 8/20/16.  He will let us know if he needs help at the show but for now judging will be done by participants choice.  Awards will be at 2PM so all cars can be out of the church lot by 2:30PM.  This is a great show & Chris & his family do a wonderful job of organizing this long time show.
~Kevin shared that the Ken Cummings Memorial will be presented at the September meeting.  Be sure to attend this meeting to find out who the recipient will be!
~Westview Manor in Derby contacted Kevin and asked if some club members would be willing to drop by their retirement home and let the residents see the cars and visit with them.  They invited the club anytime between 5-7PM.  It was decided that as the weather cools down, we would contact them and set a date so we can go visit and show off our cars.  We keep you updated on this club outing.
~Kevin also announced the Cars for the Cause on Saturday, 9/3/16 - 11AM at Lawrence Dumont Stadium which is a benefit for the Bekah & Friends Foundation to assist local cancer patients and families.
~Jack Marinelli shared that the recent "Draggin Douglas" was a huge success with hundreds of cars taking advantage of a fun evening.  The next "Draggin Douglas" night will be Saturday, 9/10/16 from 8-11PM.  Those attending the Starliner Car Show at the Kansas Air Museum have been invited to attend as well.  Jack reminded members the Garage Crawl would be 9/9/16 and the show on 9/10/16.
~Cheryl advised the club that Bionic Burger and 'WACO' would be doing a charity poker run on 9/16/16 to benefit the Wichita Children's Home.  See website for details.
~It was also announced that there would be a Friday night cruise-in on Friday 8/19/16 at Hurt's Donuts which is the old Backyard Burger location on W. 21st St.  DJ Marvin Ranich will be there and inviting all car folks to participate.

NEW BUSINESS
~At the July meeting Kevin advised that we would be having a club picnic/dinner.  Location was discussed with the American Legion being one of the possibilities.  After discussing it with the Legion and "cooks" - they agreed that they could prepare the meal for us in lieu of having it catered by someone else.  This would be great for the club & help the Legion too.  We would also like to use this event as a membership drive - if you know someone that might be thinking about joining the club, please invite them to this event as our guests.  With that in mind, we will need all members to RSVP & let us know if they will have guests.  Motion was made by Steve Dale to have the picnic at the Legion & have them prepare the meal.  Seconded by Bob Barr, motion passed.
Kevin will visit with the Legion about the meal and we will confirm a date at the September meeting.  Being inside, we won't have to worry about the weather & will have a great time of fun & fellowship!
~There was a suggestion by Bob Barr that the club consider having a Garage Crawl.  All agreed that it has been a while since we have done that and would be fun.  This kind of activity works well when it gets cold & during the winter months when other activities have ceased for the year.  Steve mentioned that perhaps we could do the garage crawl after one of our Saturday morning breakfasts at the Legion.  A date will be discussed at the September meeting along with a sign up sheet for any member willing to add their 'garage' to the list.

**UPDATE - In spite of torrential rains and bad weather on Friday before the car show, it was a great show and Chris reports that there were 188 cars.
Please remember all residents in Mulvane who were affected by the floods and lost property and in one case a family member.  This weather struck with a vengenance and after all their planning and hard work, the festival park of Old Settlers was cancelled.  We look forward to another great festival in 2017 along with the car show.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are cleaning up for these storms.

~With no further business, meeting was adjourned at 7:50PM.

NEXT MEETING IS THURSDAY, 9/15/16 - AT 6:30PM at the Mulvane American Legion.

ON THE LIGHT SIDE smiley
*A farmer in the country noticed that a gentleman would fish at the lake (close to the farmer's house) and would always leave with a stringer full of fish.

The fellow had a boat but a fishing pole was not to be seen. The farmer mentioned the situation to the game warden. The warden then started watching this man and all that the farmer said was true! The man would arrive at the lake in the morning and by early afternoon, he had a stringer full of fish.

The warden dressed like a fisherman one day and approached the man. They exchanged pleasantries and the stranger asked the warden in disguise to come fish with him. After boating for about 45 minutes and they arrived at a secluded spot.

The stranger then pulled out a stick of dynamite. The warden said, "I'm going to have to place you under arrest--I am a game warden and you are fishing illegally!"

The stranger calmly lit the stick of dynamite and handed it to the warden. The stranger then said, "Are you gonna talk or fish?"

*IF YOU HAVE A “CAR JOKE” (or any joke) YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE CLUB, PLEASE SEND IT TO CHERYL!   **Remember, it has to be ‘printable’!!!
